Dr. Rama Vaidya is MD in Obstetrics-Gynecology from Seth GS Medical College-Mumbai. Early on in her career, after completion of residency and postgraduate degree at KEM Hospital, Mumbai, she had to make a choice: Carry on in the field of OBG or take up a career in Clinical Research in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. She chose the latter and pursued her PhD in Applied Biology with a focus on Clinical Pharmacology. Her PhD thesis was on “Study of the effect of Neuroendocrine-active agents on Reproductive Endocrine Disorders”. The highlight of the outcome of the study was; regression of prolactin producing pituitary tumors with Bromoergocriptine, a dopamine-agonistic drug. The finding has stood the test of time and today the medical management of prolactinoma is well established replacing neurosurgical treatment.
She, as a Ford Foundation Fellow at Yale University School of Medicine, worked with Prof. John McLean Morris, the discoverer of testicular feminization syndrome and morning-after pill. She established fertilization in vitro model (in rabbits) for studying sperm capacitation and had advanced training in pediatric and reproductive endocrinology.
On her return, she joined the Institute for Research in Reproduction (now National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health) as a senior research officer and started the Department of Clinical Endocrinology and Infertility. She focused on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome- an area very close to her heart. She is mentoring the research area at NIRRH and a Multidisciplinary PCOS Clinic at the institute is now a reality.
In 1985 Dr. Vaidya joined Bhavans’s SPARC where she got involved in community activities. She successfully spearheaded projects like MAITREYE for post-menopausal women and SHEEL (School Health Education and Enlightened Living) for the enlightenment for school children. At present Dr. Vaidya is Director, of Division of Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders at Medical Research Centre-Kasturba Health Society. Her initiation of a new research area, Ayurvedic Pharmaco-epidemiology along with Dr. Ashok Vaidya and Dr. Bhushan Patwardhan is an important contribution to Reverse Pharmacology.
