Dr. Shobha Udipi obtained her PhD in Foods and Nutrition from Purdue University USA in 1984 under the guidance of Dr. Avanelle Kirksey. She also did her postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Kirksey at Purdue University. She returned to India in 1985 and joined SNDT Women’s University as Associate Professor. She was appointed as Professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, SNDT Women’s University in 1991 and became Head of the Department in 1998, from where she retired in 2016.
Dr. Shobha Udipi was former Professor and Head, Department of Food Science & Nutrition, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai. Earlier she was Dean- Faculty of Home Science, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai and Director of Dept. of Post Graduate Studies & Research in Home Science. She was past National President- Indian Dietetic Association
Over the years at SNDT she has guided 19 PhDs to completion and is currently guiding 3 PhDs. She has been Principal Investigator for 58 projects that were supported by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as well as national agencies like University Grants Commission, Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology and Indian Council of Agricultural Research, industries, bilateral agency- UNICEF and International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada, Harvest Plus and the Almonds Board of California.
She has worked extensively in community development programmes for urban development and training as part of Govt. of Maharashtra’s development programmes.
Her areas of interest are Maternal and Child Nutrition and Health, Nutrition and Health Education, Clinical Nutrition with focus on Cancer, Diabetes, Atherosclerosis and Obesity, Food Product Development, Indigenous/ Traditional Systems in Health and Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics in Ayurveda & Functional Foods.
She has more than 118 papers in National and International journals, 7 chapters in books, 6 books, 2 manuals and 12 monographs published by Department of Foods Science and Nutrition, SNDT Women’s University.
